Bucket List

What do you want to do before you die?

For us, wanting to see and experience all that life has to offer is incredibly important and the reason Wander in Our Shoes is even a thing. We have always wanted to travel the world and have so many things/places we want to do/see before we die.

There’s this podcast we came across a podcast that featured Ben Nemtin from the show, the Buried Life. If you haven’t already watched it, it was a show on MTV that featured four guys on a mission to crossing 100 things of off their bucket lists, while simultaneously helping strangers cross items off of theirs.

Something that Ben said in the interview really struck a chord with us. He talked about how most people, if they have a bucket list, limit themselves in what they add to it. When Ben and his friends wrote theirs, they asked themselves the question, “What do you want to do before you die?”, and they listed EVERYTHING they could imagine. Most people, us included, list things like “Go to Italy” or “Run a marathon”. While those are great goals, and certainly items worth achieving, we’ve come to agree that a bucket list should go so much deeper. Instead of writing it with the perspective that it must be all easily attainable. ask yourself this:

“If there were no limitations, what would you do before you die?”

And suddenly, a whole new door of opportunities has opened up. Ben and his friends did things like play basketball with Obama and send their #1 best selling book into space. They dove deep into their imaginations and really created a meaningful bucket list.

Something else that he mentioned that we 100% agree with: The importance of writing down your goals.

For us,  we find it’s nice to take it a step farther and voice them. By doing one or both of these, it adds some life into your dreams. It makes them more real. And, we feel like it brings you closer to achieving your goals. There’s an aspect of accountability that you start to feel.

Bucket List Item: Swimming on the Beaches of Santorini

We will be going through and adding more truly creative items to our own bucket lists. By dreaming bigger, we are pushing ourselves to achieve so much more.

Some items we’ll be adding:

  • Have Mike Posner as a guest on the future podcast
  • Make a living as travel blogger/vloggers
  • Live out of or car and travel North and South America before living abroad for a while

Sometimes, writing your goals makes you feel silly or like people may judge you. But you know what? Who cares? You will NEVER EVER reach your goals by worrying about what others will think of you. And you will never achieve them by not trying in the first place.

You have these dreams and passions for a reason. And the world, whether you choose to or not, is yours for the taking. You are in control of how you live it and what you get out of it. So, if there was no limitations to reaching your dreams, what would you do before you die?

Write down a list. Channel your inner 5 year old self and dream like you did as a kid. Make your list, then share it. Post your dreams on Facebook or text them to a friend. Read your list out loud to yourself, even. One way or another, share it. Forget feeling silly. Forget your fear of being judged or even your fear of failure. Put your dreams out into the universe, and one by one, start turning your dreams into reality.
