Foxburg, PA

Recently, Sean and I took a trip to the small, but charming, town of Foxburg, Pennsylvania. One of Sean’s very good friends was getting married in the area, so we took the weekend to explore all that Foxburg had to offer.

While Foxburg, PA has never been high on our list of places to travel to, we were interested to learn some of the fascinating history that surrounds the area.

During a chat with the owners of the local chocolate shop (more on this below), we learned that Foxburg, according to local legend, was actually acquired as a payment for a debt. William Penn is said to have to told a Philadelphia based doctor that he could keep as much land as could be walked from sunup to sundown. The doctor, whose last name was Fox, wisely hired a local Native-American to run the land for him on the longest day of summer, acquiring the small section of William Penn’s woods today known as Foxburg.

It wasn’t until the 1870’s that the area’s population boomed. After nearby Titusville discovered oil in 1859, Foxburg’s population reached a high of around 1,000 people. Today, Foxburg is home to less than 100.

Things To Do

Despite the shortage of people (or maybe even because of it), Foxburg still has a lot to offer those who wish to visit.

The village of Foxburg is actually home to the USA’s oldest golf course in continual use. What started as only a 5 hole course is today a 9 hole public golf course. After you finish a round, head to the country club to check out the American Golf Hall of Fame and Museum.

Whether it’s canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding or fishing, you can enjoy it all on the Allegheny River, situated right along the main street of Foxburg. While we didn’t personally get around to it on this trip, we heard that Foxburg Tours offers great pontoon rides along the river!

Bike the Allegheny River Trail

Rent a bike from Foxburg Tours, bring your own or lace up your sneakers and get to running the Allegheny River Trail. While the trail is only a small 3 mile section of what will eventually become a path from Erie, PA to Pittsburgh, it’s definitely worth your time. Enjoy lots of shade on a summer day and perfect views of the river as you make your way along the trail.

Where to Stay

Foxburg Inn King Suite

The Foxburg Inn is Foxburg’s only in-town accommodation. While the rooms are nothing to write home about, the King rooms and patio suites offer beautiful views overlooking the river. The rates, we thought, were very reasonable and the staff was friendly enough. Should we ever find ourselves in Foxburg for a weekend in the future, we’ll be happy to return to the Foxburg Inn.
