Virginia Beach on a Budget

Sean and I LOVE traveling and exploring new places, but we also have this desire to do that full time. So for us, that means taking a lot of weekend trips throughout the year that don’t break the bank or set us back on our goals.

We recently took some time to visit Virginia Beach, and although we only had a day to explore what has become the largest city within the common wealth, we found that there were plenty of ways to have fun that didn’t put a dent in our wallets (or our goals).

6 Ways To Explore Virginia Beach on a Budget

  1. Watch The Sunrise/Sunset
We got to Virginia Beach just in time to watch the sun rise over the water. It was beautiful, and we sat there for about an hour watching it while enjoying each other’s company.virginia-beach-sunrise
  2. Walk/Bike the Boardwalk
Virginia Beach has a 3 mile long boardwalk full of restaurants, bars, hotels and a small park. There’s a bike path that runs along if you’d like to enjoy a quick ride, or you can just take a leisurely stroll. The boardwalk is also super dog-friendly, so be sure to bring your pup along wth you too! Raven had a blast sniffing out all of the other dogs that had walked the path before her.32280184_10212339788110049_2476267547742175232_n
  3. Statue of King Neptune
In the middle of the boardwalk stands the Statue of Neptune. The 34 foot monument overlooks Neptune Park and serves as a great photo opportunity for tourists, The statue was built in honor of the local Neptune Festival held each year in September.

  4. Enjoy the Beach
Virginia Beach holds the Guinness World Record for the “world’s longest stretch of pleasure beach”. Take some time to soak up the sun by walking along the shoreline, joining in a game of volleyball, swimming in the water or even just searching for a glimpse of a dolphin or two. Dogs are also welcome and will enjoy the opportunity to dig in the sand 😉(Just please remember to clean up after your dog. There are PLENTY of trashcans on the beach to dispose of waste. It’s a huge turn off to be walking along the beach and come across a huge pile of poop. And that is the type of thing that makes dogs become banned from places like this. So PLEASE just pick up after your dog. Ok, rant over LOL.)virginia-beach-sunrise
  5. First Landing State Park
Step away from the crowds for a few hours and enjoy walking some (or all!) of the 19 miles this park has to offer. It’s located about 20 minutes away from the beach and offers some incredible trails to explore. The area, of course, is very dog friendly, and if you’re on the lookout, you may be lucky enough to spot some wildlife. Think snakes, otters, frogs and birds. All of the trails are extremely well-marked and maintained. They offer some awesome views of nature and a very peaceful atmosphere.

  6. Mount Trashmore
For the eco-friendly traveler, Virginia Beach offers this city park as an example of landfill reuse. The landfill-turned-park spans a total of 165 acres and includes everything from picnic and playground areas to volleyball courts, lakes for fishing and of course, walking trails. In the northeast corner, there is also a skate park where people like Tony Hawk have made their appearances. What kind of budget friendly activities do you enjoy while traveling?
