1 Day in Virginia Beach

On one of our latest weekend trips, Sean and I took a drive to Virginia and spent a day at the beach. Being from California, I had never visited the Atlantic Ocean before, so it was a really great first experience – for me AND our dog, Raven.

We live closer to Pittsburgh in PA, and we decided to drive to Virginia after work on Friday. It took us about 8 hours, but we finally made it to the beach just as the sun was coming up.

I know in just one day that there is plenty more to see than we ere able to. We gathered lots of suggestions on where to go, but we only managed to try a couple.

If you have the time, I recommend spending at least a weekend here, but even if all you have is a day, you won’t regret it.

1 Day In Virginia Beach

  1. Start by Watching the Sunrise
We showed up just in time to watch the sunrise over the ocean, and it was just gorgeous.

  2. Grab a Bowl from Green Cat
We searched for somewhere that would provide us with healthy options and not be terribly expensive. We tried a couple of their smoothie bowls to get a taste of different items. We each split their chocolate – peanut butter bowl, which was really yummy, but we ultimately fell in love (HARD) with their pitaya bowl. If you can only try one item, make it that. Just trust us.
While you’re there, you can also check out their little market. They have everything from jewelry to journals to coconut oil  – based lube.

  3. Walk the Boardwalk
The boardwalk was different than i had expected in that there aren’t a ton of shops along it. Like I said, I grew up in California and pictured something more like Santa Cruz when I imagined what Virginia Beach would look like. Really, there’s only hotels and restaurants. Still, the walk is really nice and gives you a chance to get extra steps in before lunch.
  4. Pose Next to the Statue of Neptune
In the middle of the boardwalk, you will find the Statue of Neptune overlooking Neptune Park. Stop next to it on your walk, and snap a photo.

  5. Eat a Picnic Lunch on the Beach
You can’t go to Virginia Beach without lounging around on it, right? Pick a spot up close to the water, and soak up some sun. You’ll find plenty of people playing volleyball and frisbee on the beach. It’s very dog friendly, too. Raven had a blast playing in the water.
  6. Take a short hike at First Landing State Park
We ventured over to this state park and were so impressed by all of the trails that they offer. Each one is very well marked, and the whole park is incredibly scenic. I was super excited to see the marsh area and spend time down on the private beach.

  7. Eat Dinner at Bay Local Eatery
We stopped here for dinner and were really impressed by their atmosphere as well as their menu options. They offer a good selection of healthy/vegan options, which we appreciated. They also have a killer cucumber mojito that is SUPER refreshing. We both ordered the portobello stacks off of their “feasts” menu, and they were really, really good. Our only complaint was the portion size. They felt like an appetizer, and for $14 we weren’t that satisfied. I will say, though, that everything else we saw come out of the kitchen seemed to be of normal portion sizes and the food was excellent, so maybe just don’t order off the feasts menu.

  8. Finish with Sunset on the Beach
After driving all night , we were too tired and ended up napping through sunset, But if we could go back, we’d totally set up camp and enjoy the view.
